Superspecialization- Is It an End of Rat Race? – Rajamahendran R

Superspeciality has become the Gateway for Practice now. After MBBS and PG around 10 years spent reaching 28 to 30 years… Post-MD General, MD paeds, MS ENT, MS General, MS OBG – now it has become a compulsion to do Superspeciality. The number of students appearing in Each specialty shows the awareness seen among the PG students. When we used to prepare for SS entrance we will be doing practice or Working in some institute… But in recent years I got shocked seeing Post Graduate degree holders sitting and reading for some specialties without working anywhere even for 2 to 3 years… I am strongly against such a mode of Preparation at the age of 30 without practicing the skill we learned in Post-graduation…

FROM RECENT NEET SS RESULTS YOU CAN SEE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WRITING EACH SPECIALTY…(WHICH IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE MOST DEMANDED COURSE AMONG PGS)

MCh Surgical Gastro – 2640
DM Cardio- 2352
MCh urology- 2200
DM Gastro – 1900
MCh onco- 1800
DM nephrology- 1430
DM Endocrinology- 1513
MCh Neuro- 950
DM Onco- 644
Mch endocrine sx- 221 And so on …

The scariest situation which is upcoming now is Single Organ or single Theme specialization … Example Post-Gastro going on for Upper GI fellowship / Liver Transplant/ Bariatric etc… which may engulf around 2 to 5 years after MCH or DM. Each Superspeciality is now moving towards such a situation…

Instead of NMC making medical education pathetic they can make plans to lead a person to single organ specialization from MBBS itself. They are making useless programs like EXIT and Bridge favoring protocols… Our country is now in the state of Supersaturation by Doctors and still, the Government wants to bring more and more MBBS Graduates as per NMC and soon every stone you throw will fall on a doctor …( Based on a famous quote – In Bangalore, if you throw a stone it will definitely fall on an engineer). Time to stop all MBBS courses new intake and increase PG and SS in a correct proportion and need … otherwise, after doing such a long journey you will never see a decent income in the future…

Steps to be taken as PG aspirant…?

  1. Your study and rat race is never going to stop any time… so please enjoy your life at every stage of life…Rat race winners may be successful but would have never been happy…
  2. Always think innovatively and plan in a different way for settlements… Never run in the way where everyone is rushing.. start thinking differently and invest wisely for the future…
  3. Don’t think since you have completed MBBS and MD you must only do the practice. Try to do business or investments which can generate decent income…Please remember your income as a practitioner will be less than a Tea shop owner in the future. I recently felt happy seeing a few doctors doing alternate business, like – one medico Building a Home type resort and leaving for rent, one medico running a successful Lab, One medico buying land and giving for Petrol bunk lease and another few medicos running Marriage hall.
  4. Never try to practice alone- Future is based on Team Work.. join 3 to 4 like-minded people and run a small nursing home or hospital with equal shares and work..with proper partnership deeds. Start your own medical shop- for your own shop start your own agency- for your agency you can tie up with medical companies of your own and every penny income can be streamlined to come to your pocket…

THOUGH A LONG POST, THIS IS MY USUAL TIME BREAKER TOPIC IN CLASSES… HOPE THIS POST WILL OPEN THE EYES OF THOSE WHO HAVE NOT HEARD THESE SHOUTING OF MINE IN CLASS…
